When Siblings Disagree; Getting your family on the same page about mom or dads care
When a parent needs more care, siblings often disagree about what to do. One lives nearby and does most of the work. One lives far away and sees things differently. One isn't ready to admit a change is happening.
These conflicts are common, and they're rarely about the care itself. They're about worry, guilt, fairness, and grief. Here's how to move forward together.
Five Ways to Get Siblings on the Same Page
1. Start with facts, not blame.
Share what you've observed (falls, missed medications, memory lapses) instead of what someone should have done. "I noticed Dad missed two appointments" opens a conversation. "You never help" ends one.
2. Get an outside opinion.
A doctor's assessment or a professional care evaluation carries weight that a sibling's opinion may not. It moves the discussion from "who's right" to "what's needed."
3. Hold a family meeting.
Include out-of-town siblings by phone or video. Set a short agenda, give everyone a turn to speak, and end with written next steps.
4. Divide roles by strength.
Not every contribution is hands-on. One sibling can manage finances, another appointments, another visits or research. Recognizing each role reduces resentment.
5. Put your parent's wishes first.
When emotions rise, return to one question: what would Mom or Dad want? If they can still share their preferences, ask them early and often.
